Common mistakes made when solving the problems on square root

Though the students enjoy solving the problems on square roots, however in many cases they tend to make mistakes. These mistakes could be because of carelessness or because the child did not understand the concept properly. It is always a good idea to be aware about the common mistakes which students usually make so that these can be corrected from the early age. Here are some of the common mistakes which students usually make when solving the problems on square roots.

☞ √0.9=0.3

√0.9 =√9/10
  =√9 / √10
  =3 / √10
∴ √0.9 =3 / √10

Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • √0.09=0.3

    • ☞ 3√3+3=6√3

    3√3+3 ≠ 6√3
    3√3+3 = 3(√3+1)

    Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • 3√3+3√3 = 6√3

    • ☞ √x+y=√x+√y

    √x+y≠√x+√y

    Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • For e.g., √9+16≠√9+√16 (5≠3+4)

    • ☞ √x²+y²=x+y

    √x²+y² ≠ x+y

    Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • For e.g., √12²+5² ≠ 12+5  (13≠12+5)

    • ☞ 3√5+2√5=6√5

    3√5+2√5 ≠ 6√5

    Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • As the square roots (√5) are common, they can be added, ∴ 3√5+2√5=5√5

    • ☞ 0.2²=0.4

    0.2² ≠ 0.4

  • 0.2² = 0.2×0.2 = 0.04

    • ☞ (4a)²=4a²

    (4a)² ≠ 4a²

    Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • (4a)² = 4a×4a = 16a²

    • ☞ (−3)²=−9

    (−3)² ≠ −9

  • (−3)² = (−3)×(−3) = 9
