Common mistakes made when solving problem on average

Though the students enjoy solving problems on average, however in many cases they tend to make mistakes. These mistakes could be because of carelessness or because the child did not understand the concept properly. It is always a good idea to be aware about the common mistakes which students usually make so that these can be corrected from the early age. Here are some of the common mistakes which students usually make when solving problem on average.

☞ average speed of the car which travels the first half distance at the speed of 40 km/hr and the next half at 60 km/hr is 50km/hr

The correct answer is 48km/hr

Ways to teach the children to minimize this error
  • Let the total distance covered by the car be 2S.
    Time taken to cover the first half distance = S
    40
    Time taken to cover the second half distance = S
    60
    Average Speed = Total Distance covered
    Total Time taken
    = 2S
    S/40 + S/60
    = 2
    1/40 + 1/60
    = 2
    (40+60)/(40×60)
    = 2×40×60
    100
    = 48 km/hr
